About this evening

The first of six

What is AI, actually? Not the promise and not the threat, but the thing itself. This first evening looks plainly at how these systems work, and at the habit all of us have of projecting onto them.

It was given on September 16, 2026 in Dundon-Berchtold Auditorium at the University of Portland, to a full room of students, faculty, and people from across the city.

The rest of the series

Five more evenings

Each evening stands on its own, and the six together make an argument. There is nothing to catch up on and no background required. Recordings are posted here as they go up.
